Make that 28 candidates: Sharon Webb, others do qualify

Memphis City School Board member Sharon Webb and a few other candidates are actually qualified to run for Memphis mayor, Shelby County Election Commission officials said this afternoon in correction of previous statements.

In total, 28 out of 36 candidates turned in the paperwork necessary to run for the Mayors seat. This means they paid the $100 filing fee and collected 25 signatures of registered Memphis voters.

Earlier today, Election Commission officials had a list showing Webb only collected 24 signatures.

But when reached by phone, Webb said she had already been contacted about this issue and had fixed it.

"I brought in another signature," Webb said. "It's straight now."

Election Commission administrator Richard Holden said he and his staff double-checked the records, discovering updated signature sheets for some of the candidates.

"She fixed it," Holden said of Webb. "That was my mistake."

Following is an updated list of qualified candidates:

Leo Awgowhat, Constance Houston, Sharon Webb, Kenneth E. Baroff, David Vinciarelli, Joe Brown, Randy Cagle, Charles Carpenter, Dewey Clark, Carol Chumney, James Clingan, Menelik Fombi, Wanda Halbert, Johnny Hatcher, Robert "Prince Mongo" Hodges, Dewayne Jones, E.C. Jones, Jerry Lawler, Myron Lowery, Ernest Lunati, Harrel C. Moore, Mary T. Shelby-Wright, Detric Stigall, Vuong Vaughn Vo, Kenneth Whalum Jr., A C Wharton, John Willingham, and Thomas "Silky" Sullivan.

Following is a list of candidates who did not qualify:

Ain't that a laugh, Sharon Webb, the so-called educated school board member can't count.

Then we have those brilliant outstanding ccandidates like Mongo, Eernie Lunati, (thought he was in jail),E.C. Jones,John Willingham and good ol' Joe Brown the incompetent Councilman.

There's about 4 serious contenders and 25 clowns running for Mayor, if one of those 4 doesn't win I'll be packing my bags and heading east or further south.

May I wish all my fellow Memphians good luck on Oct. 15th.

Who can you trust that loves the city more than Jerry Lawler. Vote for real change rather than voting for the lesser of two evils. Jerry is a legend in Memphis and he truly wants to help make it the greatest city ever. We thank Jerry for putting Memphis on the map and continuing to make a difference.

I wish everyone luck. Additionally I repsect all critical comments. I can guarantee you I am not a clown. I am an attorney as well as an instructor at the University of Memphis. My name is Kenneth E. Baroff, not Kenneth T. Baroff. Can we get this corrected before the print edition?? Anyone with questions please contact me at kbaroff@memphis.edu.

Should the total be 28? Mr. Baroff is listed twice.

Thanks you for quickly fixing the spelling error in my name. This is a good example. A small problem was noticed, and we worked quickly and quietly to get it fixed. Without fanfare. And it was fixed. We can all do this people!! Best of luck to all the candidates.

I have no chance just like most of the people running. I think Memphis is a joke and so are you. That's why we are running for Mayor of Memphis.

Vote for me or any of the other 40 jokers. Thank you.

We employers are less trusting and more security-conscious these days. While we may read your curriculum vitae, we need to view your work experience that demonstrates the practical application of your abilities. We also want to be sure that your background is clean so we order criminal history report and fingerprint and background checks. We also check your references, questioning whether the reference you listed exist and actually know you. If you fail to meet our criteria in your work history or reference check or we uncover any criminal wrongdoing in your history, we will not offer employment to you. If we must pay our utility bills to keep our service and we must pay our tax bills to avoid repossession or foreclosure, we expect the same from our employees. If any preferential treatment is uncovered, we will not offer employment to you.

Dear fellow employers of our next Memphis mayor,

Will your choice for mayor pass the employment criteria? Would you expect less from your potential employee/mayor than your own employer expects from you?

I offer this challenge. Let every serious applicant/contender for mayor submit their resume, employment history, the 25 references and criminal history report for our review. After all, they have applied for a job with our company, Memphis.

By the way, is there nothing in our laws that would prevent someone with a criminal record from running for this lofty position of trust?

The Memphis Daily News reports 29 candidates as qualified. They list Bob Reed among them, where y'all have him listed as not qualified.

These comments went downhill fast.
Perhaps the CA can remove them...

Never mind. I see the Daily News has rewritten their story.

Is Joe Brown the judge Joe Brown? He is from Memphis and has expressed interest in the past in running for this post.
